Procedure details

When our experienced cataract surgeon implants a new high-quality Acrysof monofocal yellow lens, she performs cataract surgery with mono-focal lenses in local anesthesia. The cloudy lens is painlessly crushed with ultrasound and removed through a microincision. The surgery takes place in an ambulatory setting and takes about 10 minutes. You can leave the eye clinic immediately after the surgery, and the post-operative check-up is the next day. Both eyes cataract surgery requires only 5 days in Prague, Brno, or Bratislava.

We offer a so-called laser-assisted cataract procedure where the incision is performed by a femtosecond laser LenSx, which allows even greater precision and faster recovery time. As mentioned above, the standard cataract surgery with IOL monofocal lens comes with a high-quality Acrysof lens implant produced by Alcon, an American company.

We stock lens implants from other manufacturers as well. The most popular are Alcon and Zeiss. Multifocal (EDOF, Trifocal) and toric versions of intraocular lenses are also available. Monofocal lenses are single-vision lenses and correct vision at near or far distance. Extended depth of focus (EDOF) Vivity lenses provide good acuity at distance and arm’s length and reduce dependence on reading glasses. Trifocal lenses were designed to eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. Trifocal lenses aim at good acuity for distance, intermediate, and close-up.

How long is the recovery time for cataract patients?

The recovery time is 4 weeks after the surgery; during that time, you will use eye drops and need to be more careful with your activity level. However, you can continue your daily activities from the day after surgery. Our doctors do not prescribe a leave of absence unless you work in a risky environment (heavy dust, contact sports, risk of being hit in the head, or lifting heavy objects). Neuroadaptation after cataract surgery with monofocal lenses is usually several weeks. In the case of trifocal lenses, the adaptation is usually longer.

What are lens replacement options?

Patients have some options regarding cataract lens replacements. Monofocal IOLs correct vision in one range: near or far distance. On the other hand, multifocal (Trifocal) IOLs improve sight at multiple distances.

Will lens implant need to be replaced in the future?

No, the intraocular lens implant will remain in your eye permanently for your lifetime. However, in rare cases, the implant needs to be replaced.
