Procedure details
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a highly effective procedure designed to restore the natural function and youthful appearance of the eyelids. It involves the removal of excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids to reduce under-eye bags, correct sagging lids, and create a refreshed look.
This outpatient procedure can be performed on adults of all ages and is often chosen by those who want to look less tired or reduce the heaviness around their eyes. It is important to note that blepharoplasty is not intended to remove fine lines, wrinkles, or dark circles – other cosmetic treatments are better suited for those goals.
How the procedure is performed
Your treatment journey begins with a personal consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During this visit, the surgeon will examine the structure of your eyelids, discuss your goals, and recommend the most appropriate surgical plan.
Blepharoplasty typically takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on whether you're having surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If you are only having upper eyelid surgery, the procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia. However, for combined upper and lower eyelid surgery, procedural sedation (also known as analgosedation) is preferred to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation.
During upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon carefully marks the natural skin creases to place the incisions so that any scarring is virtually invisible. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and the incision is closed with fine sutures. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made just below the lash line or inside the eyelid (if only fat removal is needed), allowing for minimal visible scarring.
In cases involving the lower eyelids, a short hospital stay – usually just half a day – may be required.
Recovery and aftercare
After the surgery, you can expect some swelling and bruising, which typically subsides within 10 to 14 days. Stitches are usually removed 7 to 10 days after the procedure, either by our team or a general practitioner in your home country.
From around day 10 after stitch removal, we recommend gently massaging the scar area and keeping it well moisturized for several months. This supports optimal healing and helps reduce the visibility of any scars over time.
Most patients can return to their normal daily activities within a week to ten days. Complete healing, including the softening of scars and reduction of swelling, can take a few weeks to a few months, depending on the individual.
