Procedure details

Gynaecomastia is a common condition where excess glandular or fatty tissue builds up in the male breast area. Hormonal imbalances, genetics, weight gain, or certain medications can cause it. Gynaecomastia surgery removes the excess tissue and reshapes the chest to achieve a natural and toned look.

Surgical Techniques for Male Breast Reduction

Depending on the cause and extent of the gynaecomastia, our surgeons use one or a combination of the following methods:
  • Liposuction – Targets and removes excess fat from the chest area
  • Surgical removal of the excess breast gland

  • Gynaecomastia surgery is typically carried out under general anaesthesia and takes approximately two hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the case and the chosen surgical technique.

Liposuction alone may be sufficient when the enlargement is caused primarily by excess fat. In this case, the surgeon will make two small incisions, each about 3–4 mm long, through which a thin cannula is inserted to break up and remove the fat. These incisions are usually placed in inconspicuous areas to ensure minimal visible scarring.

A more direct approach is taken if glandular breast tissue needs to be removed. A small incision is made along the lower half of the areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple), allowing the surgeon to excise the dense tissue. This technique enables more precise contouring of the chest, resulting in a well-concealed scar that blends naturally into the surrounding skin.

The surgery requires only one night of hospitalisation, after which patients are typically discharged the following day with post-operative instructions. A compression garment is often recommended to support healing, reduce swelling, and help achieve the desired chest contour.
