A deep plane facelift is an advanced and extremely effective surgical technique, which smooths and tightens the skin of the face and neck; improves definition and redistributes fat to restore volume, resulting in a youthful, well-rested appearance. As it lifts the deep tissues and not merely the upper layers of the face and neck, it achieves a very natural-looking result and avoids the overly pulled and taut windswept look. It offers many benefits over other forms of facial rejuvenation surgery, including superior definition around the cheeks and jawline, longer lasting results, smaller incisions and minimal scarring and fewer complications as the thicker skin surface helps to prevent skin damage. The procedure can also be combined with a neck lift, brow lift and lower and/or upper eyelid surgery.

Procedure details

Unlike a traditional facelift, which only lifts the SMAS (the layer of tissue which covers the facial muscles and nerves from the forehead to the neck), a deep plane facelift goes even deeper below the SMAS in order to release the ligaments which tether the deep connective tissues and muscles. This allows the surgeon to pull those deep layers up and re-suspend them to achieve superior results.

Surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. You will remain in the clinic for between 1 to 3 nights post-op and then stay at a nearby hotel for a further 4 nights. Dressings will stay on for 3 to 5 days and compression garments should be worn for another 2 weeks to minimise swelling and bruising. Non-absorbable sutures are removed 5 to 12 days after surgery. You can resume normal activities after 2 to 3 weeks and sport after 4 weeks unless your surgeon recommends otherwise.

Am I a suitable candidate for a deep plane facelift?

This surgery is suitable for men and women between the ages of 45 to 60. You need to be in good health, ideally a non-smoker (smoking can negatively affect wound healing) and at a healthy, stable weight.

What areas can a deep plane facelift treat?

The procedure is ideal for those affected by loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles, sagging, jowls, nasolabial folds, malar mounds/festoons (eye bags) or sunken cheeks resulting in a general loss of tightness and definition in the face.

What can I expect during the recovery period?

Swelling, bruising, discomfort and skin discolouration are normal and take time to subside. You may also experience temporary numbness, pins and needles or other sensations around the incision sites, as nerves can be affected by surgery. Your face and neck may feel tight and facial movement may be restricted, but this will ease over time. We provide a comprehensive aftercare package, which includes detailed post-op instructions from your surgeon (who will continue to monitor your progress after you return home) and a free check-up within a year.

How long will the results last?

It is hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on many factors such as genetics, sun exposure, skin quality, diet and fitness. Many experts believe results should last between 5 and 12 years. The procedure does not stop you ageing, however, so you will need to look after your health and develop a good skincare routine to ensure long-term results.

Will I have scarring?

Incisions are made within the hairline (hair should continue to grow through the scar so it will be completely obscured) and concealed around the ears so they will not be visible.
